Ingredients
  

For the berry mixture

  • 1 quart fresh or frozen blackberries, rinsed Fresh blackberries are ideal, but frozen ones work well.
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar For the berry mixture.
  • ½ teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon for the berry mixture.
  • ½ teaspoon lemon extract

For the dumplings

  • 1 ½ cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar For the dumpling batter.
  • ¼ teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon for the dumpling batter.
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg Optional, can be replaced with cinnamon.
  • cup milk Use almond or plant-based milk for a dairy-free option.

Preparation of Berry Mixture

  • In a large, wide saucepan, mix the blackberries, water, 1 cup sugar, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and lemon extract together. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  • Once boiling, reduce the heat and let it simmer for 5 minutes.

Preparation of Dumplings

  • In a bowl, combine the flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon salt, nutmeg, and milk. Stir until mixed well.

Cooking

  • Drop the dumpling batter by tablespoonfuls into the simmering berry mixture.
  • Cover the saucepan tightly and let it simmer for an additional 15 minutes.

Serving

  • Serve hot, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of fresh whipped cream.

Notes

Let leftover dumplings cool, then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat gently, adding water to prevent drying out. Feel free to substitute peaches or blueberries for a variation.
