Cabbage Rolls

Comforting and filling cabbage rolls stuffed with ground meat and rice, topped with tomato sauce. A cozy weeknight dinner that’s easy to make!

Ingredients
  

For the cabbage rolls

  • 1 head green cabbage Do not use red cabbage.
  • 1 lb ground beef Can substitute with ground turkey, pork, or for vegetarians, canned beans or lentils.
  • 1 cup cooked rice Can also use uncooked rice; adjust cooking time accordingly.
  • 1 medium onion Chopped.
  • 2 cloves garlic Minced.

For the sauce

  • 2 cups tomato sauce Can substitute with crushed tomatoes or other sauces.

Seasonings

  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp pepper

Preparation

  • Boil a large pot of salted water.
  • Core the cabbage and drop the head into the boiling water. Peel off leaves a few minutes later.
  • In a bowl, mix together ground meat, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, and seasonings.

Assembly and Baking

  • Lay out a cabbage leaf and place a scoop of filling on top.
  • Tuck in the sides and roll up like a burrito.
  • Place the rolls seam-side down in a deep baking dish.
  • Pour sauce over the rolls and cover with foil.
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 90 minutes.

Notes

For best flavor, let filling sit for a few minutes before assembling. Rolls can be made ahead and frozen either before or after baking. Store leftovers in an airtight container for 3-4 days.
