Main Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef 85 percent lean
- ½ medium onion finely diced
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup about 10 ounces
- ½ cup milk
- ¼ cup ketchup
- ¼ cup yellow mustard
- 1 ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese 1 cup for the layer and 1/2 cup for the top
- 32 oz frozen fries straight cut or crinkle cut
- ½ cup dill pickles diced, for topping
- ½ cup tomatoes chopped, for topping
- 1 cup shredded lettuce for topping
Cooking
Brown the beef. Cook the beef and onion over medium heat until browned and 160 degrees F, then drain and stir in the garlic powder and pepper.
Mix the sauce. Whisk the soup, milk, ketchup, and mustard together and stir into the beef.
Layer. Spread the mixture in a greased 9x13 dish, top with 1 cup cheddar, and cover with frozen fries.
Bake. Bake at 400 degrees F for 30 minutes until golden and bubbling.
Melt the cheese. Add the remaining cheddar and bake for 5 minutes more.
Rest and top. Rest for 5 minutes and garnish with pickles, tomatoes, and lettuce.
Substitutions: Use cream of chicken soup instead of mushroom, or sweet potato fries in place of regular fries.
Tips: Drain the beef, keep the fries frozen, and make sure the center reaches 165 degrees F.
Storage: Refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months. Reheat at 375 degrees F.
