Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef 80/20
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • lettuce, sliced tomato, and sliced onion for topping
  • sliced cheese optional
  • ketchup, mustard, or mayonnaise for serving

Instructions

Cooking

  • Combine the ground beef with the salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder in a large bowl. Mix gently, just until combined.
  • Divide into 4 equal portions and shape each into a patty slightly wider than the bun. Press a shallow thumbprint into the center of each.
  • Preheat a grill or heavy skillet over medium-high heat and lightly oil the grates or pan.
  • Cook the patties thumbprint side up for 4 to 5 minutes. Flip once and cook 4 to 5 minutes more, until a thermometer in the center reads 160°F. Do not press down on the patties.
  • If using cheese, add a slice during the last minute of cooking and cover briefly to melt.
  • Toast the buns cut side down for 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Rest the patties for a few minutes, then assemble on the buns with your toppings.

Notes

Nutrition values are an estimate per burger with bun, without cheese or sauces. Ground beef should reach 160°F. Store leftover patties in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat to 165°F.
