Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon White vinegar
  • 5 tablespoons Vegetable oil
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract (optional) Can also be used for frosting.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  • In a greased 8-inch square baking pan, mix the dry ingredients: all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Make three depressions in the dry mix: two small and one big.
  • In the first small depression, put the vinegar. In the second, add the vanilla extract. In the big depression, add the vegetable oil.
  • Pour the water over the mix and stir until it's smooth.

Baking

  • Put the pan in the oven's center and bake for about 35 minutes.
  • Check if the cake is done by inserting a toothpick; it should come out clean.

Cooling

  • Let the cake cool completely before serving or frosting.

Notes

Customizations include using almond extract for flavor variation, swapping vegetable oil for canola, or using apple cider vinegar. Store unfrosted cake at room temperature for 3 days, or refrigerate a frosted cake for up to 6 days.
