- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp white vinegar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 5 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 cup cold water
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8-inch square or round cake pan.
Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
Create wells in the dry mixture for the vinegar, vanilla, and oil.
Pour water over all and stir until just combined and smooth.
Pour batter into the prepared pan and level the top.
Bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Optional: Top with a dusting of powdered sugar or a simple chocolate glaze.
