Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 5 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8-inch round or square baking pan.
  • Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add wet ingredients: Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add vinegar, vanilla, oil, and water.
  • Stir until well combined and smooth — do not overmix.
  • Pour batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
  • Bake for about 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Cool the cake in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove and let cool completely before serving.
  • Optional: Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with a simple glaze.
