Ingredients
  

For the Marinade

  • cup soy sauce all-purpose or light soy, not dark or sweet
  • ¼ cup brown sugar adjust according to sweetness preference
  • 2 tbsp mirin
  • ¼ cup onion, finely grated (including juice)
  • ¼ cup nashi pear, finely grated (including juice, can substitute with normal pear or red apple)
  • 2 tsp garlic, finely grated
  • 2 tsp ginger, finely grated
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tsp black pepper

For the Main Ingredients

  • 1 kg beef short ribs, butterflied Korean style (or thinly sliced through the bone)
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil (for cooking)
  • green onion, sesame seeds, coriander/cilantro leaves (for garnish)
  • Kimchi Fried Rice (for serving)
  • Smashed Cucumbers (for serving)

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a bowl, whisk together the marinade ingredients.
  • Place the beef in a ziplock bag or a glass/ceramic container. Pour the marinade over the beef and mix well to coat. Cover and refrigerate for 24 hours.

Cooking

  • After marinating, heat vegetable oil in a grill pan or a skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Cook the beef for about 3-5 minutes on each side or until nicely browned and cooked to your preference.

Serving

  • Serve Galbi hot, garnished with green onions, sesame seeds, and coriander leaves. It's great alongside Kimchi Fried Rice and Smashed Cucumbers.
  • You can also use lettuce leaves to wrap the beef for a fun and interactive dining experience.

Notes

Make sure to marinate the beef for the full 24 hours for the best flavor. Use Korean-style short ribs for the most authentic experience. Adjust the sugar in the marinade according to your sweet preference. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
