Main Ingredients
- 8 cup sliced Granny Smith apples from about 6 apples, peeled
- 2 tbsp lemon juice from 1 lemon
- 2 tbsp orange zest from 1 orange
- ¼ cup brown sugar packed
- ¼ tsp kosher salt
- 1 ¼ tsp apple pie spice
- ½ cup unsalted butter room temperature, 1 stick
- ½ cup brown sugar packed
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- ¼ tsp kosher salt
- ½ tsp apple pie spice
- ¼ cup quick oats
Cooking
Prep the dish. Heat the oven to 350 degrees F and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
Season the apples. Toss the sliced apples with the lemon juice, orange zest, brown sugar, salt, and apple pie spice, then spread them in the dish.
Make the crumble. Mix the soft butter, brown sugar, flour, salt, and spice until crumbly, then stir in the quick oats.
Top. Scatter the crumble evenly over the apples.
Bake. Bake for 45 minutes, until the apples are tender and the topping is golden, then cool for 10 minutes.
Substitutions: Use half Granny Smith and half sweeter apples for a milder flavor.
Tips: Do not pack the topping so it crisps. Slice the apples evenly.
Storage: Refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 1 month.
