  • 2 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 ¼ cups light corn syrup
  • ½ cup water
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • to taste Food coloring (optional)

Preparation

  • In a large saucepan, combine granulated sugar, corn syrup, water, and salt over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil without stirring until it reaches 250°F on a candy thermometer (hard ball stage).
  • Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and food coloring if desired.
  • Pour the mixture onto a greased marble slab or baking sheet and let cool slightly.
  • Once cool enough to handle, grease your hands and begin pulling the taffy until it becomes light in color and fluffy.
  • Roll the taffy into long ropes and cut into pieces.
  • Dust with cornstarch to prevent sticking and store in an airtight container.

Notes

Store the taffy in an airtight container. They can last for several weeks but are best enjoyed fresh. Alternatively, customize by adding flavored extracts or mixing food colors.
