Main Ingredients
- 1 ½ lb ground beef
- 1 medium onion finely chopped
- 1 small green bell pepper finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 1 cup ketchup
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp yellow mustard
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tsp brown sugar
- ¼ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp paprika
- ¼ tsp red pepper flakes optional
- 6 hamburger buns
- 2 tbsp butter for toasting the buns
Cooking
Brown the beef. Cook over medium heat, breaking it apart, until no pink remains, then drain the fat. The beef should reach 160 degrees F.
Soften. Stir in the onion and pepper and cook about 5 minutes until soft.
Add the garlic. Cook 1 minute, stirring often.
Mix the sauce. Whisk the ketchup, tomato paste, mustard, Worcestershire, brown sugar, salt, pepper, paprika, and pepper flakes.
Simmer. Pour the sauce into the pan, lower the heat, and simmer 10 to 15 minutes until thick.
Toast and serve. Toast the buns in the melted butter until golden and spoon the filling on top.
Substitutions: Mix half ground pork with the beef for a richer filling.
Tips: Chop the vegetables fine. For a thicker filling, simmer longer or stir in cornstarch mixed with cold water.
Storage: Refrigerate the filling 3 to 4 days and reheat to 165 degrees F.
