  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • cup sugar
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder for the batter
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup brown sugar for the topping
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder for the topping

Wet Ingredients

  • ½ cup milk can use non-dairy milk
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Optional Ingredients

  • ½ cup chopped nuts optional

Other

  • 1 ¾ cup hot water

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.
  • Add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Stir until smooth.
  • Fold in chopped nuts if using.

Baking

  • Pour batter into a greased 9×9-inch baking dish.
  • In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and additional cocoa powder, then sprinkle over the batter.
  • Carefully pour hot water over the top without stirring.
  • Bake for 35-40 minutes until risen and the top looks set.
  • Let cool slightly before serving with ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

Best served warm. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat as needed. You can prepare the batter in advance.
