  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons white granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon cream of tartar
  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ cup chilled salted butter Chilled for better texture.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, cream of tartar, and salt.
  • Cut in the chilled butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Make a well in the center and pour in the milk. Mix until just combined.
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead gently for about 30 seconds.
  • Pat the dough to about 1-inch thickness and cut out biscuits with a cutter.
  • Place the biscuits on a baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.

Serving

  • Serve warm with butter or your favorite spread.

Notes

Tips: Use chilled butter for the best flaky texture. Don’t overmix the dough; mix just until combined to keep biscuits tender. When cutting out biscuits, do not twist the cutter as it can prevent them from rising. Store leftover biscuits in an airtight container for up to 2 days at room temperature, or freeze for up to 3 months.
