Ingredients
  

For the crust

  • 1 box German chocolate cake mix
  • cup evaporated milk (divided)
  • ¾ cup melted butter

For the filling

  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 14 oz package caramels (unwrapped)
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • optional Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven as directed on the cake mix box.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the cake mix, 1/3 cup of evaporated milk, and melted butter until a dough forms.
  • Press half of this dough into the bottom of a greased baking pan.
  • Bake for a few minutes according to box instructions.
  • In a saucepan, melt the caramels with the remaining 1/3 cup of evaporated milk over low heat, stirring until smooth.
  • Remove the crust from the oven and sprinkle with chopped pecans and chocolate chips.
  • Pour the caramel mixture evenly over the top.
  • Crumble the remaining dough over the caramel layer.
  • Bake until golden and set.
  • Allow to cool before dusting with powdered sugar if desired and cutting into bars.

Notes

Make sure to press the dough firmly into the pan for a good base. Keep stirring the caramel mixture to prevent it from burning. For added flavor, consider adding extra pecans or chocolate chips on top before baking.
