Ingredients

For the chutney sauce

  • 800 g canned tomatoes (crushed or diced)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ¼ tsp smoked paprika
  • ¼ tsp mustard powder
  • ¼ tsp celery salt
  • ½ tsp cooking/kosher salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

Instructions

Preparation

  • Combine all the ingredients in a medium saucepan.

Cooking

  • Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
  • Reduce the heat to medium-low so it simmers gently.
  • Let it cook for 25 minutes, stirring regularly, until the sauce reduces and thickens enough to draw a path across the base of the saucepan with a spoon.

Finishing

  • Transfer the chutney to a bowl. Let it cool, then slather it on your burgers, or serve warm or cooled.

Notes

Adjust spices to your taste, add cayenne pepper for heat, and consider using diced tomatoes for a chunkier texture. Fresh herbs can add a refreshing twist.
