  • 1 cup hot water To thin gravy consistency.
  • 1 large onion, chopped Enhances flavor.
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced For umami flavor.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Boosts aroma.
  • 1 tsp salt Adjust to taste.
  • 1 tsp black pepper Adjust to taste.

Preparation

  • Pat the round steak dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
  • Season generously with salt and pepper on all sides. Let it sit for 10 minutes.
  • Slice the steak into 1/2-inch strips for stir-fry or leave whole for pot cooking.

Cooking Techniques

  • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the steak until golden brown on both sides.
  • Transfer to a slow cooker, Instant Pot, or oven dish.
  • Deglaze the pan with broth or wine to form the gravy base.
  • For Instant Pot, cook on high pressure for 40 minutes, then natural release for 10 minutes.
  • For Slow Cooker, set on low for 6-8 hours.
  • For oven, bake at 325°F for 2-3 hours, basting with pan juices.

Making Gravy

  • Combine 1 cup of hot water with the onion gravy mix, whisking until smooth.
  • Add the mixture to the pan with the deglazed bits and simmer until thickened.

Notes

Pair with creamy mashed potatoes or buttered egg noodles. Adjust seasoning and consider adding roasted vegetables for balance.
