Ingredients
  

For the patties

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef Use lean ground beef for better texture
  • 0.5 cup dry breadcrumbs Use plain or Italian-style breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg Acts as a binder
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • Black pepper to taste Black pepper

For the gravy

  • 1 can Campbell's French onion soup 10 1/2 oz
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour For thickening the gravy
  • 0.25 cup ketchup
  • 1-3 tsp Worcestershire sauce Adjust to taste
  • 0.5 tsp mustard powder For flavor
  • 0.25 cup water

Preparation

  • In a bowl, mix 1/3 cup of the onion soup with ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, and pepper.
  • Shape the mixture into six oval patties.

Cooking

  • Heat a skillet to medium-high heat and brown the patties until nicely crusted.
  • Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
  • In a small bowl, whisk the remaining onion soup with flour until smooth.
  • Stir in the ketchup, water, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard powder to create the sauce.
  • Pour the sauce over the patties in the skillet.
  • Cover and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Serving

  • Serve hot, ideally with creamy mashed potatoes or your favorite sides.

Notes

Leftover Salisbury steak can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze in a suitable container for up to 2 months. To reheat, thaw overnight and warm on the stove or in the microwave.
