  • ½ cup panko breadcrumbs (or 1/3 cup ordinary breadcrumbs) For binding the patties
  • 1 egg Helps to bind the meat mixture
  • ½ 1/2 onion (finely chopped) Adds flavor to the patties
  • 1 clove garlic (minced) For additional flavor
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 beef bouillon cube (crumbled) Enhances the beef flavor
  • ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce Adds depth to the flavor
  • 3 tsp dijon mustard (or 2 tsp dry mustard powder)

Mushroom Gravy

  • 2 tbsp olive oil For cooking the patties
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced) For the gravy
  • ½ onion (finely chopped) For the gravy
  • 5 oz mushrooms (sliced) Fresh mushrooms are recommended
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter For sautéing the onions and mushrooms
  • 3 tbsp flour (all-purpose / plain) For thickening the gravy
  • 2 cups beef broth / stock (low sodium)
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 tsp dijon mustard
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, 1/2 onion (finely chopped), panko breadcrumbs, minced garlic, egg, ketchup, crumbled beef bouillon cube, Worcestershire sauce, and dijon mustard. Season with salt and pepper. Mix everything until well combined.
  • Shape the mixture into oval patties, about 1 inch thick. This should make around 4 to 6 patties.

Cooking

  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the patties to the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
  • In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add 1/2 onion (finely chopped) and minced garlic cloves; sauté until softened. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they release their juices.
  • Sprinkle the flour over the mushroom mixture. Stir to combine and cook for about 1 minute. Slowly whisk in beef broth and water, then add dijon mustard and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer until the gravy thickens.
  • Return the patties to the skillet, spoon the gravy over them, and let them simmer for a few minutes to absorb the flavors. Serve hot.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop until heated through. Experiment with different herbs and spices for added flavor.
