  • 3-4 medium medium white turnips Choose smaller, younger turnips for milder flavor.
  • 1 cup heavy cream This provides a creamy base for the dish.
  • 2 cups freshly grated Gruyere or Parmesan cheese Freshly grated cheese melts better than pre-shredded.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Peel and thinly slice the turnips using a mandoline slicer.
  • In a baking dish, layer the thinly sliced turnips, sprinkling salt and pepper between layers.

Layering and Baking

  • Pour the heavy cream over the layered turnips.
  • Sprinkle the freshly grated cheese generously over the top layer.
  • Cover the dish with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes until the cheese is golden and the turnips are tender.

Notes

Crispy bacon or fresh herbs can be added for extra flavor. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and consume within three days. Reheat in the oven for best results.
