Main Ingredients
- 5 cups apples peeled and sliced; Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Braeburn, Jonagold, or Cortland
- ½ cup light brown sugar packed
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour for the apple layer
- 2 tbsp water
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ cup old-fashioned oats
- ½ cup all-purpose flour for the topping
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ tsp kosher salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter melted
Cooking
Heat the oven. Preheat to 350 degrees F and grease a 9x9 inch baking dish.
Slice the apples. Peel, core, and slice the apples about 1/4 inch thick, then spread them in the dish.
Make the sauce. Stir the brown sugar, 2 tbsp flour, water, and cinnamon into a thick paste, spoon it over the apples, and toss to coat.
Mix the topping. Whisk the oats, 1/2 cup flour, granulated sugar, and salt, then stir in the melted butter until clumps form.
Top and bake. Scatter the crumble evenly and bake 55 to 60 minutes, until the apples are tender and the top is deep golden.
Rest. Cool 10 to 15 minutes so the sauce thickens before scooping.
Substitutions: Quick oats work in place of old-fashioned oats, and dark brown sugar adds a deeper flavor.
Tips: Slice the apples evenly so they cook at the same pace, and set the dish on a sheet pan if it bubbles over.
Storage: Refrigerate covered for 3 to 4 days and warm in a 350 degree F oven before serving.
