Main Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef or ground turkey
- ¾ cup chopped onion
- ½ green bell pepper chopped
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
- ½ cup ketchup
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp yellow mustard
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- 4 hamburger buns toasted
Cooking
Start the beef. Cook in a large skillet over medium high heat, crumbling with a spatula, and drain excess grease if needed.
Add the vegetables. Once the beef begins to brown, add the onion and pepper and cook until the beef is no longer pink. The beef should reach 160 degrees F.
Add the garlic. Stir for 30 seconds, then reduce the heat to medium low.
Build the sauce. Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire, mustard, salt, and pepper.
Simmer. Cook at a low simmer about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thick.
Serve. Spoon onto toasted buns.
Substitutions: Use ground turkey cooked to 165 degrees F. Reduce the brown sugar for a tangier sauce.
Tips: Simmer longer for a thicker filling or add a splash of water to loosen it.
Storage: Refrigerate 3 to 4 days or freeze up to 3 months. Reheat to 165 degrees F.
