  • 3 Bosc pears (peeled and cut into 1/2-inch slices)
  • cup light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour For the fruit mixture
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • Pinch ground nutmeg

Crisp Topping

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup old fashioned oats
  • ½ cup chopped pecans
  • cup light brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter (cut into cubes) Cold butter works best

Instructions

Prepare the Topping

  • Combine 3/4 cup flour, oats, pecans, 1/3 cup brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a medium bowl.
  • Add the cold butter and toss to coat.
  • Use your fingers to work the butter into the dry ingredients until it looks like coarse crumbs.
  • Set aside.

Prepare the Fruit

  • Lightly coat the inside of a 4-quart slow cooker with nonstick spray.
  • Place the sliced apples and pears into the slow cooker.
  • Stir in 1/3 cup brown sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg.

Assemble and Cook

  • Sprinkle the prepared topping over the fruit mixture.
  • Gently press the crumbs into the batter with your fingertips.
  • Place a clean dishtowel over the slow cooker, cover, and cook on low heat for 2-3 hours or on high heat for about 90 minutes.
  • After cooking, remove the dishtowel and continue cooking uncovered until the topping is browned and the apples are just tender, which will take about 1 hour.

Notes

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. A drizzle of caramel sauce adds a nice touch. For variations, try adding dried fruits or changing the nuts used.
