Ingredients
  

For the hamburger patties

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup minced onion
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp pepper

For the sauce

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 onion sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup 10.75 oz
  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Preparation

  • In a bowl, mix together the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, minced onion, salt, and pepper.
  • Shape the mixture into four patties.

Cooking

  • Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the sliced onion and minced garlic to the skillet and sauté until they are fragrant and golden.
  • Stir in the cream of mushroom soup, water, and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Place the hamburger patties in the skillet and spoon the sauce over them.
  • Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat, cover, and cook the patties for about 20 minutes.
  • Serve the smothered hamburger steaks over rice or mashed potatoes.

Notes

For extra flavor, add herbs like thyme or parsley to the sauce. To thicken the sauce, simmer it longer without the lid. Ensure not to overcook the patties; they should be juicy and tender.
