Ingredients
  

For the dough

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • ¼ cup butter, softened
  • ¾ cup warm water
  • Oil for frying

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  • Add the softened butter and mix until the mixture is crumbly.
  • Gradually pour in the warm water, mixing until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough for a few minutes until it is smooth.
  • Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.

Cooking

  • Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick and cut it into squares.
  • Heat oil in a deep skillet over medium heat.
  • Fry the squares until they puff up and turn golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side.
  • Drain the sopapillas on paper towels and serve warm with honey.

Notes

Sopapillas are best served warm right after frying. Drizzle them generously with honey for a sweet finish. They can also be sprinkled with powdered sugar for extra sweetness. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for longer storage.
