Filling Ingredients

  • 3 lbs 3 lbs apples A mix of sweet and tart apples works best.
  • 1 tbsp 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • ½ cup 1/2 cup white granulated sugar
  • ½ cup 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp 2 tbsp cornstarch For thickening.
  • 1 and ½ tsp 1 and 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • ¼ tsp 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • ¼ tsp 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp 1 tsp vanilla extract Add at the end of cooking.

Preparation

  • In a medium non-stick skillet over medium-low heat, add the sliced apples, white sugar, brown sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, and salt. Stir gently to mix everything together.

Cooking

  • Cover the skillet with a lid and let it cook over medium-low heat for about 15-20 minutes, checking the apples every 3-5 minutes and stirring them to ensure they’re not sticking.
  • If the apples start sticking, add 1 tablespoon of water and stir.

Finishing

  • Once the apples are fork-tender, turn off the heat and mix in the vanilla extract. Let the filling cool slightly before using.

Notes

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 3-5 days, or freeze for up to 3 months. Adjust sweetness and spices to your liking while cooking. Add fruits like pears or berries for a variation.
