Main Ingredients
- 4 bacon slices diced
- 1 small onion finely chopped
- 2 can green beans 14 1/2 ounces each, drained and rinsed
- 1 can low sodium chicken broth 14 1/2 ounces
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp apple cider vinegar optional, stirred in at the end
Cooking
Crisp the bacon. Cook the bacon in a large skillet for 7 to 8 minutes until crisp, then remove it and keep the drippings.
Cook the onion. Cook the onion in the drippings for 4 to 5 minutes until soft and translucent.
Simmer. Add the beans, broth, brown sugar, garlic powder, and pepper, then simmer for 15 to 20 minutes until tender.
Finish. Stir in the bacon, simmer for 5 more minutes, then add the vinegar and serve hot.
Substitutions: Use vegetable broth, olive oil, and smoked paprika in place of the bacon and chicken broth for a meatless version.
Tips: Taste before salting, since the bacon and canned beans are already salty.
Storage: Refrigerate for up to 4 days and reheat to 165 degrees F.
