Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4 slices bacon, diced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cans green beans, drained (14.5 oz each)
  • 1 can chicken broth (14.5 oz)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

Cooking

  • In a large skillet, cook the diced bacon over medium heat until it is crispy. Remove the bacon pieces and set them aside, leaving the bacon grease in the skillet.
  • In the same skillet with the bacon grease, add the chopped onion and sauté for about 4-5 minutes until the onion becomes soft and translucent.
  • Add the drained green beans to the skillet and pour in the chicken broth. Stir to combine.
  • Stir in the brown sugar, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
  • Let the green beans simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to combine and the broth to reduce slightly.
  • Once the beans are tender and the broth has reduced a bit, stir in the cooked bacon pieces and simmer for another 5 minutes to let the flavors meld.
  • Serve the green beans hot, topped with extra crispy bacon if desired.

Notes

If using fresh green beans, blanch them in boiling water for a few minutes before adding. Adjust seasoning to taste and consider adding red pepper flakes for some heat. For a vegetarian option, omit the bacon and use vegetable broth instead.
