Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 16 ounces ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 small onion (diced)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder (or 2 cloves garlic, minced)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 ounces beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 4 slices white American or provolone cheese

Instructions

Preparation

  • Heat a sauté pan over medium heat. Crumble the ground beef and season with salt and pepper. Cook until browned, about 5 minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside. If there's excess grease, drain it out now.
  • Add butter to the pan. Once it's melted, add the diced onion and bell pepper. Sauté until the vegetables start to brown and the onions become translucent, about 4-5 minutes.

Cooking

  • Reduce the heat to low and return the cooked ground beef to the pan. Add garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, and beef broth, scraping the bottom of the pan as you mix the ingredients. Cook for about one minute.
  • Add cornstarch and stir until it dissolves, about another minute. This will thicken the beef broth to create a nice sauce. If the beef looks dry, add 1-2 tablespoons of water.
  • Remove from heat. Top the meat mixture with cheese slices and let it sit for 1-2 minutes, or until melted.
  • Spoon the mixture onto the rolls and serve immediately.

Notes

Serve with crispy fries or a side salad. Offer hot sauce or your favorite condiments on the side. To store, let the mixture cool completely, refrigerate for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 2 months.
